Angkor Wat Sunrise vs. Sunset: Which is Better?

One of the most common questions we get is whether to book a sunrise or sunset tour. Both offer incredible, completely different experiences. Here is what you need to know.
Deciding between the early morning wake-up call or the late afternoon golden hour is one of the hardest choices when planning your Angkor itinerary. The temples take on an entirely different atmosphere depending on the time of day, and the lighting will dramatically affect your photographs.
Additionally, the crowds behave very differently at sunrise versus sunset. Understanding the flow of tourists, the heat of the day, and the logistics of securing a good viewing spot will help you make the best decision for your travel style.
The Angkor Wat Sunrise (Highly Recommended)
Watching the sun crest over the iconic five towers of Angkor Wat and reflect perfectly in the lotus pond is a bucket-list experience. The sky transitions from deep purple to blazing orange.
Pros: You beat the extreme midday heat. You get the most iconic photograph possible. The temple complexes are generally cooler for exploring immediately afterward.
Cons: It requires a 4:30 AM wake-up call! It is also the most crowded time at the main reflection pond, so you must arrive early to secure a good spot.
The Sunset at Phnom Bakheng
While Angkor Wat itself faces west and looks beautiful in the afternoon light, the most famous sunset spot is the hill temple of Phnom Bakheng.
Pros: You get a panoramic view over the jungle, with the distant towers of Angkor Wat catching the golden light. No early wake-up call required!
Cons: The Apsara Authority limits the number of people allowed on Phnom Bakheng at sunset to 300. You must arrive by 4:00 PM and wait in the heat to ensure you get a spot. Once the sun drops, the walk down the hill is in the dark.
Our Advice
If you only have one day, do the sunrise. The visual payoff at Angkor Wat is unmatched, and getting an early start on your temple exploration before the heat hits is the smartest way to tour.
